The recent heatwave has highlighted to homeowners the importance of having homes that are better adapted for the extreme weather events associated with climate change. 22% of homeowners say they are actively considering installing climate adaptation measures to their current property Our survey of 2,000 UK adults revealed that almost a quarter (23%) of people who are looking to move house say that flood resilience climate adaptations measures have become more important to them when considering a new house, and over a quarter (26%) favouring air conditioning. Additionally, 22% of homeowners revealed that they are actively considering the installation of climate adaptation measures to their current property. The research comes as some parts of the UK record over 140 days without rainfall, the longest drought since 1976. The same heatwave was followed by an exceptionally wet autumn and saw some parts of the UK experience 200% of expected rainfall, which has caused concern for the potential aftermath of this summerҳ droughts. Flash flooding from heavy downpours has led to devastating damage to some areas of the UK, with London particularly affected in 2021 and most recently, in July, the north western counties of Northern Ireland. Homeowners have been, in some cases, unable to return to their homes for several months, causing both heightened financial implications and emotional trauma. As we enter the second heatwave, it is worth remembering that last summer, much of Germany and Belgium as well as parts of London were clearing up damage from sudden flooding. Both heatwaves and floods are going to become more frequent in the UK as the climate gets wetter and warmer. Without the right measures, more families across the UK will suffer the adverse health and financial implications of climate change. It is critical that properties ֠new and existing ֠adapt to this increasing risk and that householders are aware of the importance of flood resilience measures before the flood-waters arrive.
