Small amounts of urine are sprayed onto vertical surfaces. When a cat is urinating, the tail may quiver, and the cat will urinate with little or no crouching. Leaving small amounts of urine or stool on horizontal surfaces is a less common way for cats to mark their territory, but it does happen.
